Google+ for business is next – but not just yet

If you’ve not yet seen all the furore about Google’s attempt to muscle in on Facebook and Twitter’s domination of the social networking sphere, then you may want to check out this blog on our sister site.

Whatever people think of it, the success of the ‘closed group’ launch of Google+ has worked. One estimate suggests the service grew at 280% per day in the first week, as Google find new ways to cope with capacity and people finding loopholes to invite their friends.

Yet, Google+ does look very much like a personal social tool. There is no obvious commercial element (other than for Google themselves monitoring users) that Facebook has via applications, etc. However, Google have now said that is intentional. In a blog post this week Google admitted the social network currently on show is not ready for corporate use yet, but Google+ for business will be rolled our later this year.

Christian Oestlien, a developer on the Google+ project, wrote in a blog post. “We have been watching Google+ take shape over the last week and we’ve seen some really great companies get involved…But frankly, we know our product as it stands is not optimally suited to their needs. In fact, it was kind of an awkward moment for us when we asked Ford Motor Co. for his (or was it her?) gender!”

Oestlien backed that up in a video blog post, asking companies and organisations hold off using the consumer version of Google+ for business purposes. He did however indicat, that some test-user organisations may get the chance to help optimise the prodcuct for better busines use. “Right now, we’re very much focused on optimising for the consumer experience…But we have a great team of engineers building a similarly optimised business experience for Google+. We are very excited about it and hope to roll it out later this year.” Oestlien added.

We will keep you posted as soon as we hear more.

Have you tested Google+? Do you have any suggestions as to how it could become more business friendly?

I have looked at google + and quite frankly at the moment it is beyond irritating. Companies should specialise in what they do and do it well, with facebook so firmly entrenched with over 500 million users, do people really want lots of different social netwrok accounts? Check out the demise of myspace, just goes to show, people will not want multiple accounts but I guess time will tell.

Google has recently requested not to use profile pages as company business pages. Watch a video from Google+ product manager on
